Why there was so much smell during the tanning of skins?
Before being treated, the skins, had to be hung for some days and since it was organic material it rot away. There were two methods to avoid this: either smoke the skins or immerse them in water not to rot. This is what the Vetereschi’s did… They immersed the skins in the Vetra canal and this was the reason of that terrible smell!
